The epicenter is located off the west coast of northern Sumatra, ~3670 km to the Southwest of Taipei, Taiwan. Based on the USGS report, the moment magnitude has been revised from 8.2 to 9.0, which is the largest one during the past 40 years. This devasting megathrust earthquake and its triggered tsunami have caused over 144,000 death around the Indian Ocean (Jan. 5, 2005). Earthquake locations and moment tensor solutions are all from NEIC/USGS. Surface deformation given in ITFR 97 is derived from recent GPS measurement.
